Maxthon – The most popular browser in China

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Flock, a Firefox-based Web browser that plays up social networking online, has raised $15 million in a fourth round of funding led by Fidelity Ventures. The company's previous investors, Bessemer Venture Partners, Catamount Ventures, and Shasta Ventures, also participated in the round.

The deal shows continued faith in the alternative market for Web browsers, beyond the dominant Internet Explorer. Alternative-browser rival Maxthon, for example, has been downloaded more than 140 million times; and it's one of the most popular browsers in China. The Beijing-based company has pulled in investments from Charles River Ventures and Google.

The company plans to use the funds to expand its research and development, marketing, and global expansion efforts. To date, the company has raised an estimated $30 million.

Maxthon’s Feature >Screen Capture

Maxthon has a lot of features. However this doesn’t seem to be much of a selling point these days due to the ability Firefox users have of downloading just about anything and adding it to their browser.

Screen Capture :

Maxthon comes with a decent screen capturing tool available through the tools menu. Thinking ahead, the Maxthon team has created a keypad shortcut for the ‘Capture Region’ option which is the one people are likely to use the most.

Magic Fill

I really liked this one.

With Magic Fill you can save any number of online identities and all the associated details. You could have one identity with fake details for signing up to forums or other websites where spam may be a risk. You can save another identity containing real details for when you wish to use those. And of course, like all the browsers, Maxthon also saves username and password details for websites automatically.

Multisearch :

I think this is one of the best features of Maxthon. You can customize and import the search engines you wish to use, then after a search you can rapidly flick between them to compare results - this is especially useful for image searches.

All the rage in Europe: Firefox market share climbs higher, Leaving behind all the Browsers

Friday, May 16, 2008

European web metrics company Xiti has published browser market share statistics for March. The data indicates that the open-source Firefox web browser has climbed to almost 29 percent market share in Europe, where it is still steadily increasing in popularity. This is no small accomplishment.

The European country that saw the most growth was Andorra, where Firefox marketshare rose from 22.7 percent in February to 24.8 percent in March. The three countries with the highest Firefox market share are Finland, Poland, and Slovenia, which all have between 43 and 46 percent. Notably, the study saw the average market share exceed 30 percent during weekends, likely because of people who are using Internet Explorer at work and Firefox at home, by choice.

According to Xiti, Internet Explorer has lost 2.5 percentage points during the past six months. Opera and Safari have also seen slight gains during that time period to 3.3 and 2.3 percent, respectively. Xiti does not provide statistics for iPhone browser marketshare and the report does not specify whether or not iPhone browsing is counted as part of the Safari statistics.

Xiti's global statistics indicate that Oceania—comprised of Australia and New Zealand—has the highest Firefox market share of any continent, with 31.2 percent. The continent with the lowest marketshare is Asia, at 17.2 percent. In many parts of Asia, Firefox has trouble competing with Maxthon, a browser created in China that uses Internet Explorer's rendering engine.

Xiti surprisingly found that Firefox market share in North America actually dropped by one percentage point in March. I initially suspected that the apparent drop might have been caused by users who were running Firefox 3 pre-releases, but that hypothesis didn't hold up when I examined the user agent strings. Firefox 3 betas all correctly report that they are Firefox. It is true that the nightly builds identify themselves as Minefield instead of Firefox, but it's unlikely that there are enough Minefield users to generate that much of a change.

Another factor that could possibly have contributed to the drop in North America was the release of the vastly improved Safari 3.1 for Windows, which Apple pushed out to its massive iTunes userbase through its software update system. But that also seems unlikely.

Despite the dip in North America, Firefox is clearly continuing to gain popularity around the world. This trend will likely get a big boost from the release of Firefox 3 later this year.

MaxthonWent Global in 2007

Thursday, May 1, 2008

Maxthon (formerly known as MyIE) is a browser that reportedly has 30% of the browser market in its home country of China, second only to IE and ahead of Firefox. It is a powerful tabbed, fully customizable and 100% free Internet browser built on top of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) platform. The milestone Maxthon 2.0 beta was released early last month. We carried out an in-depth interview with SVP & Partner at Maxthon Netanel Jacobsson (former Business Development Director at AOL/ICQ), who told us the full story of this exciting browser and its bid for global success.

The History of Maxthon

The interview starts with a bit of history about Maxthon, a browser generally not well known in the Western world. Netanel said that MyIE was originally created by a Chinese man called Changyou, who wanted to customize his IE browser. MyIE became the first browser to support tabbed browsing. Changyou posted most of the code onto his BBS, but unexpectedly left the project due to personal reasons in 2000. Luckily, one of his admirers Jeff Chen decided to continue the development and released a new version with the name MyIE2. MyIE2 grew very fast, with massive contributions from passionate users all over the world. They communicated via BBS, Forums and IM - and helped on developing the plugins, sites, skins, debugging, etc.’
