Maxthon launches web browser for Android tablets

Maxthon has launched a new version of its Android web browser designed for tablets. The app supports Android 1.6 and up, so you can install it on virtually any Android device, but the new browser has a user interface meant to take advantage of the extra screen real estate you get on a 10 inch tablet.
The feature list is virtually identical to the one for Maxthon’s smartphone web browser, but elements of the user interface including the navigation buttons have been moved to the top of the screen next to the location bar. The thumbnail icons for bookmarks on the new tab page are also larger, and there’s a new icon which you can tap to bring up the settings menu
.


Other features that make Maxthon attractive include an integrated RSS reader, support for gestures, tabbed browsing, and the ability to synchronize your bookmarks across devices if you use Maxthon on a PC or another mobile device.

Exploring Maxthon’s Hidden Features

There used to be a fad for putting “Easter eggs” in software. These were hidden, undocumented bits of code that revealed a surprise if you stumbled upon the right combination of keystrokes and mouse clicks–sort of like the bejeweled scenes that lay inside Tiffany Easter eggs, which explains the origin of the term.

Software Easter eggs, however, are not as valuable or delightful as Tiffany surprises. Usually they are something as unamusing as a list of the names of everyone who worked on the software or a little animated scene.

Maxthon has its own sort of Easter eggs–not that I can tell that was what the developers of Max had in mind when they created them. I suspect, given the wealthy of features in Maxthon, they thought they were just running out of traditional places to stow commands, tools, and menus that Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome should only wish they had, hidden or otherwise. Whatever, the result is that some of Maxthon’s most helpful features are hidden unless you have a roadmap to them.

That’s what this is–a roadmap, or, rather, the first of several road maps that will appear over the coming days. I’m sacrificing the convenience of having all the tourist attractions on a single map because in a single map the territory gets too crowded and the details are too small.

More Than 4,000,000 People Surfed the Games with Maxthon's Olympic Browser

More than 4,000,000 people have downloaded the Olympics themed version of Maxthon.  Maxthon International, the developer of China's most popular Web browser partnered with Sina, a major Chinese media company, to produce versions of the Maxthon browser modified for the Olympics in both Chinese and English.

The Chinese version added Sina's Olympic news coverage to its default homepage and Sina's forum.  New Olympic blog links were added to the browser's toolbar.  The software was given a facelift in China red, traditional gray and natural green.

The English version of Maxthon added an Olympic medal scoreboard to Maxthon's multi-use sidebar.

 

During the international Olympics in Beijing, Maxthon provided free help services for visitors.  More than 180 Maxthon users signed up to staff Maxthon's Online Volunteer Web site.  They used PCs and chat software to answer Olympic tourists' questions about Olympic scheduling and locations, housing, restaurants, entertainment, and shopping. The volunteers provided chat services in English, Chinese, Dutch, French, Russian, and Spanish. 

"We have such a large number of users in all countries, and with the Olympics being held in the same city where Maxthon is based, it just seemed right for us to do something to help people from around the world," said Jeff Chen, CEO of Maxthon.

Maxthon 2.0 is a free Internet browser.  It has been downloaded nearly 160 million times just from Maxthon's own site.  In China, Maxthon has about 30 percent of the browser market, beaten only by Microsoft Internet Explorer.  The company has only recently begun to actively market the browser in the United States, but already it is making strong inroads into a market that has been dominated by Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox.

CNET has a story about the Maxthon browser, which is a modification to Microsoft Internet explorer that provides features like tabbed browsing, ad filtering and, most interesting for China users, the ability to use proxy servers more easily. It was formerly known as MyIE2, and was a simple mod to MSIE. Competition/innovation in the Web browser space is a good thing.
I’m a bit dubious about this claim however:
According to Maxthon research, about 14 percent of the Chinese Web population has used the browser and 17 percent employs it for Web search.
Any stats from “Maxthon research” cannot really be taken at face value. Any China users care to comment on how widespread the browser is in the PRC, or whether you’ve used it yourself?

Maxthon International, developers of the Maxthon 2 Internet browser and a Chinese company with a worldwide presence, is providing free help services for visitors to the International Olympics in Beijing.More than 300 Maxthon users have signed up to staff Maxthon's Online Volunteer Web site ( http://volunteer.maxthon.cn/ ). They are using PCs and chat software to answer Olympic tourists' questions about Olympic scheduling and locations, housing, restaurants, entertainment, and shopping. The volunteers are providing chat services in English, Chinese, Dutch, French, Russian, and Spanish.Through Aug 3, the site is open from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Beijing time. From Aug. 4 to Aug 30, the volunteer center will provide help from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The page also has a digital bulletin board where visitors can leave and read messages. Google Takes Partial Ownership Of Maxthon Browser

Multiple sources are confirming that the Chinese/Israeli startup behind the Maxthon Browser has sold a minority stake to Google. The total investment size is rumored to be around $1 million. We also heard that this investment is part of a “much larger strategic deal” between the two companies.
Maxthon has had over 80 million downloads of its browser, and over half of its users are in China. Maxthon-originated searches may account for up to 25% of total Baidu traffic, according to one source.
At the very least we expect the strategic deal to involve replacing the default search option in the browser from the Baidu search engine in China and Yahoo in other countries with Google search. The deal may also go beyond search and involve integration with other Google services directly into the browser. Maxthon would then be promoted on Google as a preferred browser.
The deal was apparently done at least two months ago, but the companies have delayed releasing the news. We’ve contacted Netanel Jacobsson at Maxthon about this story, but he has declined to comment. We also have an email into Google PR for comment.
Maxthon has raised less than $6 million prior to this investment. Seed financing came from Morten Lund and WI Harper in March 2005, and CRV invested around $5 million in the company in March 2006.

I have installed Maxthon 2 and Firefox 3 many times on my computer. I use Firefox as my main browser? In this post I take Maxthon 2.1.1 and Firefox 3 to the challenge to see which one has more features and what not. Of course the choice remains for you to decide which one works best for you. All of the comparisons below use fresh installed browsers, no new installed plug-ins, themes, and so on.

This is all based on my personal preference. Meaning to other people their pros and cons list might be different based on an average user or their preferences.

I personally don’t like the spell check to appear whenever I write something.

I think popup dialog is more visible to Internet average users.You don’t have to keep IE installed as long as Trident render dll is there.I see it as one of the great leap of Maxthon. Why shall it use slow, bulky IE’s favorite system.

What’s wrong to have the download manager in a tab page? Actually it’s used widely in a lot of software, like Opera, uTorrent web admin etc. A popup download manager is just ‘old style’ UI.
All download history is in the download manager tab… Hey, you said you don’t like popup dialog with spell check and now you like it? What a double standard.

I don’t know what you refer to. But Maxthon can drag and drop text,link or whatever you do with IE. Yes. Maxthon does not have such feature. But if you call it Cons just because Firefox has this feature and Maxthon does not have. You can find really a lot of Cons in Firefox. Just name a few: Screen Capture feature, Advanced Ads blocker, Advanced Proxy, CPU saving mode, File sniffer, Translations, External tools, Boss Key…
