Maxthon browser in China

CNET has a story about the Maxthon browser, which is a modification to Microsoft Internet explorer that provides features like tabbed browsing, ad filtering and, most interesting for China users, the ability to use proxy servers more easily. It was formerly known as MyIE2, and was a simple mod to MSIE. Competition/innovation in the Web browser space is a good thing.
I’m a bit dubious about this claim however:
According to Maxthon research, about 14 percent of the Chinese Web population has used the browser and 17 percent employs it for Web search.
Any stats from “Maxthon research” cannot really be taken at face value. Any China users care to comment on how widespread the browser is in the PRC, or whether you’ve used it yourself?

Maxthon Providing Online Help to Olympics Visitors

Maxthon International, developers of the Maxthon 2 Internet browser and a Chinese company with a worldwide presence, is providing free help services for visitors to the International Olympics in Beijing.More than 300 Maxthon users have signed up to staff Maxthon's Online Volunteer Web site ( http://volunteer.maxthon.cn/ ). They are using PCs and chat software to answer Olympic tourists' questions about Olympic scheduling and locations, housing, restaurants, entertainment, and shopping. The volunteers are providing chat services in English, Chinese, Dutch, French, Russian, and Spanish.Through Aug 3, the site is open from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Beijing time. From Aug. 4 to Aug 30, the volunteer center will provide help from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The page also has a digital bulletin board where visitors can leave and read messages. The board is open 24 hours a day."We have such a large number of users in all countries, and with the Olympics being held in the same city where Maxthon is based, it just seemed right for us to do something to help people from around the world," said Jeff Chen, CEO of Maxthon.Maxthon 2.0 is a free Internet browser. It has been downloaded nearly 160 million times just from Maxthon's own site ( http://www.maxthon.com ). In China, Maxthon has about 30 percent of the browser market, beaten only by Microsoft Internet Explorer. The company has only recently begun to actively market the browser in the United States, but already it is making strong inroads into a market that has been dominated by Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox Browser.What began as a one-person project to improve on Microsoft Explorer has grown into an independent browser, with Maxthon consistently leading Internet Explorer in features and performance. Long before such features became available on MS Explorer and some other rival browsers, Maxthon provided a tabbed interface for opening several Web sites at the same time, split screen views of two site simultaneously, a spell checker, a library of plug-ins and skins, automatic form filling, language translations, CPU and memory savers, pop-up blockers, advanced Internet security, mouse-gesture navigation, and undo of accidentally closed Web pages. Many of these features are still not available today on Microsoft and competing browsers. Google Takes Partial Ownership Of Maxthon Browser

Multiple sources are confirming that the Chinese/Israeli startup behind the Maxthon Browser has sold a minority stake to Google. The total investment size is rumored to be around $1 million. We also heard that this investment is part of a “much larger strategic deal” between the two companies.
Maxthon has had over 80 million downloads of its browser, and over half of its users are in China. Maxthon-originated searches may account for up to 25% of total Baidu traffic, according to one source.
At the very least we expect the strategic deal to involve replacing the default search option in the browser from the Baidu search engine in China and Yahoo in other countries with Google search. The deal may also go beyond search and involve integration with other Google services directly into the browser. Maxthon would then be promoted on Google as a preferred browser.
The deal was apparently done at least two months ago, but the companies have delayed releasing the news. We’ve contacted Netanel Jacobsson at Maxthon about this story, but he has declined to comment. We also have an email into Google PR for comment.
Maxthon has raised less than $6 million prior to this investment. Seed financing came from Morten Lund and WI Harper in March 2005, and CRV invested around $5 million in the company in March 2006.

I have installed Maxthon 2 and Firefox 3 many times on my computer. I use Firefox as my main browser? In this post I take Maxthon 2.1.1 and Firefox 3 to the challenge to see which one has more features and what not. Of course the choice remains for you to decide which one works best for you. All of the comparisons below use fresh installed browsers, no new installed plug-ins, themes, and so on.

This is all based on my personal preference. Meaning to other people their pros and cons list might be different based on an average user or their preferences.

I personally don’t like the spell check to appear whenever I write something.

I think popup dialog is more visible to Internet average users.You don’t have to keep IE installed as long as Trident render dll is there.I see it as one of the great leap of Maxthon. Why shall it use slow, bulky IE’s favorite system.

What’s wrong to have the download manager in a tab page? Actually it’s used widely in a lot of software, like Opera, uTorrent web admin etc. A popup download manager is just ‘old style’ UI.
All download history is in the download manager tab… Hey, you said you don’t like popup dialog with spell check and now you like it? What a double standard.

I don’t know what you refer to. But Maxthon can drag and drop text,link or whatever you do with IE. Yes. Maxthon does not have such feature. But if you call it Cons just because Firefox has this feature and Maxthon does not have. You can find really a lot of Cons in Firefox. Just name a few: Screen Capture feature, Advanced Ads blocker, Advanced Proxy, CPU saving mode, File sniffer, Translations, External tools, Boss Key…

But I ve always used Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer(though I ve used Maxthon as well but for short period as I m addicted to Mozilla Firefox) ...From both of them I ve always preffered Mozilla firefox because of its add ons it provides.

One of the most answered questions by Maxthon support has to be whether Maxthon can be used in Linux, or does Maxthon have a version for Linux. Officially Maxthon works only in Windows since Maxthon uses Internet Explorer’s rendering engine. Yet the speculation is that Maxthon can some how work in Linux with the use of Wine with some tweaks, though we haven’t tried.

Recently a Maxthon user has successfully installed Maxthon 2.1.0 in Ubuntu 8.04 and shared his experience in our Forum. Maxthon seems to work fine from the preliminary usage.

Maxthon – The most popular browser in China

Flock, a Firefox-based Web browser that plays up social networking online, has raised $15 million in a fourth round of funding led by Fidelity Ventures. The company's previous investors, Bessemer Venture Partners, Catamount Ventures, and Shasta Ventures, also participated in the round.

The deal shows continued faith in the alternative market for Web browsers, beyond the dominant Internet Explorer. Alternative-browser rival Maxthon, for example, has been downloaded more than 140 million times; and it's one of the most popular browsers in China. The Beijing-based company has pulled in investments from Charles River Ventures and Google.

The company plans to use the funds to expand its research and development, marketing, and global expansion efforts. To date, the company has raised an estimated $30 million.

Maxthon’s Feature >Screen Capture

Maxthon has a lot of features. However this doesn’t seem to be much of a selling point these days due to the ability Firefox users have of downloading just about anything and adding it to their browser.

Maxthon comes with a decent screen capturing tool available through the tools menu. Thinking ahead, the Maxthon team has created a keypad shortcut for the ‘Capture Region’ option which is the one people are likely to use the most.

Magic Fill

I really liked this one.

With Magic Fill you can save any number of online identities and all the associated details. You could have one identity with fake details for signing up to forums or other websites where spam may be a risk. You can save another identity containing real details for when you wish to use those. And of course, like all the browsers, Maxthon also saves username and password details for websites automatically.

Multisearch :

I think this is one of the best features of Maxthon. You can customize and import the search engines you wish to use, then after a search you can rapidly flick between them to compare results - this is especially useful for image searches.

MaxthonWent Global in 2007

Maxthon (formerly known as MyIE) is a browser that reportedly has 30% of the browser market in its home country of China, second only to IE and ahead of Firefox. It is a powerful tabbed, fully customizable and 100% free Internet browser built on top of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) platform. The milestone Maxthon 2.0 beta was released early last month. We carried out an in-depth interview with SVP & Partner at Maxthon Netanel Jacobsson (former Business Development Director at AOL/ICQ), who told us the full story of this exciting browser and its bid for global success.



The History of Maxthon

The interview starts with a bit of history about Maxthon, a browser generally not well known in the Western world. Netanel said that MyIE was originally created by a Chinese man called Changyou, who wanted to customize his IE browser. MyIE became the first browser to support tabbed browsing. Changyou posted most of the code onto his BBS, but unexpectedly left the project due to personal reasons in 2000. Luckily, one of his admirers Jeff Chen decided to continue the development and released a new version with the name MyIE2. MyIE2 grew very fast, with massive contributions from passionate users all over the world. They communicated via BBS, Forums and IM - and helped on developing the plugins, sites, skins, debugging, etc.’
